Christmas Day Safety!

Have a Safe and Enjoyable Christmas. Merry Christmas from your friends at Aroostook County EMA!

Christmas Day safety focuses on fire prevention (water trees, keep flammable decor away from heat, turn off lights), preventing slips/falls (clear clutter, use sturdy ladders, de-ice paths), securing homes (check alarms, lock doors), and being cautious with food/drink, ensuring kids/pets don’t access hazards like candles or poisonous plants. Key steps include inspecting lights, not overloading circuits, and never leaving candles or cooking unattended.

Fire Safety

  • Christmas Trees: Water real trees daily; keep them 3+ feet from heat sources; use fire-retardant artificial trees; turn off lights before bed/leaving.
  • Lights: Inspect frayed wires; don’t overload outlets; use outdoor lights outside; unplug when not supervised.
  • Candles/Fireplaces: Place candles in sturdy holders away from flammable items; use screens on fireplaces; never leave unattended.
  • Cooking: Don’t leave cooking unattended; clean chimneys; beware of turkey fryers.

Slips, Trips & Falls

  • Clear clutter: Keep floors free of presents, wrapping, and cables.
  • Ladder safety: Use sturdy ladders with good grip when decorating.
  • Outdoor hazards: De-ice steps and walkways.

Children & Pets

  • Keep matches, lighters, medications, and poisonous plants (poinsettias, mistletoe) out of reach.
  • Supervise kids around heat sources and fragile decorations.
  • Dispose of ribbons, plastic, and small parts promptly after gifts are opened.

General & Home Security

  • Test smoke/carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Lock doors/windows; use timers for lights when away.
  • Be aware of your surroundings while shopping; keep valuables hidden.

Health & Food

  • Be mindful of food-drug interactions (e.g., grapefruit).
  • Drink in moderation and arrange safe rides.
