The 3-Foot Rule

The 3-foot rule in fire prevention dictates that all combustible materials—such as furniture, curtains, clothing, laundry, and papers—must be kept at least 3 feet away from heat sources. This includes fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters, furnaces, and candles to prevent accidental ignition.

Key Applications of the 3-Foot Rule:

  • Heating Equipment: Maintain a 3-foot “kid-free zone” around space heaters and fireplaces.
  • Kitchen Safety: Keep towels, curtains, and food packaging 3 feet away from the stove to prevent kitchen fires.
  • Outdoor Safety: Keep fire pits, grills, and chimineas at least 3 feet away from deck railings, siding, or any combustible materials.
  • General Safety: Ensure items are not placed near heating vents or radiators.

Following this rule is a critical, simple action that can prevent significant residential fire damage.
