WINTER TIRE SAFETY 2025

Winter tire safety relies on proper installation and maintenance, including using a full set of four matching tires with adequate tread depth, and checking air pressure regularly, especially during cold weather. It is also crucial to adjust your driving habits by accelerating, braking, and turning gently, maintaining a larger following distance, and driving at slower speeds on snowy or icy roads.

Tire Maintenance:

  • Use a full set: Always install winter tires in a set of four matching tires to ensure proper handling and safety.
  • Check air pressure: Cold weather can reduce tire pressure, so check it at least once a month and before long trips.
  • Maintain tread depth: Winter tire performance is significantly impacted by tread depth. The recommended minimum for snow is 4 mm (5/32”), though the legal minimum may be lower. Tires with a tread depth below this should be replaced.
  • Replace old tires: Winter tires, like all tires, have a limited lifespan. Consider replacing tires that are six years old or older.
  • Inspect regularly: Check for damage such as cuts or bulges and inspect the tread and sidewalls.
  • Store properly: When not in use, store winter tires properly to preserve them.

Driving Habits:

  • Drive slowly: Reduce your speed and allow for longer stopping distances, as it takes longer to stop on icy or snowy surfaces.
  • Accelerate and brake smoothly: Avoid sudden movements, as this can cause your tires to lose grip.
  • Increase following distance: Give yourself more space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Maneuver gently: Avoid abrupt turns and braking and let the tires do the work for you by moving smoothly.
  • Use grooves when possible: On unplowed roads, try to stay in the tracks left by other vehicles to gain traction.

Important Considerations:

  • Winter tires are essential: All-season tires may not be sufficient for severe winter conditions, and summer tires are not designed for cold weather.
  • Check for the symbol: Look for the “Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake Symbol” on the sidewall to ensure your tires are designed for winter use.
  • Don’t rely on technology alone: Features like ABS and stability control are not a substitute for proper tires and safe driving habits.
  • Carry emergency supplies: Consider carrying a tire repair kit or other emergency supplies in case of a flat tire.
