With the Extreme cold temperatures, we have been having lately, we thought we would share some friendly advice for our fury friends.
When temperatures drop, pets need extra care to stay safe, warm, and healthy.
1. Keep Them Warm Indoors
• Limit outdoor time, especially for small, short-haired, or elderly pets.
• Provide a cozy bed away from drafts and cold floors.
• Avoid space heaters or fireplaces where pets could get burned.
2. Dress for the Weather
• Use pet sweaters or coats for dogs with thin fur.
• Make sure clothing fits comfortably and doesn’t restrict movement.
3. Protect Paws
• Snow, ice, and salt can irritate paw pads.
• Wipe paws after walks to remove chemicals and moisture.
• Consider pet-safe booties for extra protection.
4. Watch for Signs of Cold Stress
• Shivering, whining, or seeking warmth are signs your pet is too cold.
• Frostbite and hypothermia can occur quickly in freezing conditions.
5. Adjust Food and Water
• Outdoor pets may need more calories to maintain body heat.
• Ensure water bowls don’t freeze; use heated bowls if necessary.
6. Provide Shelter for Outdoor Animals
• If pets must stay outside, provide insulated, dry shelters with bedding.
• The shelter should be small enough to retain body heat but large enough for comfort.
7. Avoid Antifreeze and Chemicals
• Antifreeze is toxic but has a sweet taste that attracts animals.
• Clean up spills immediately and store chemicals securely.
Cold weather can be tough on pets, but with a few precautions, you can keep them safe and comfortable all winter long.
