Drought Conditions in Aroostook County

Here is the latest Drought Information Statement for Northern and Eastern Maine, issued October 1, 2026. Moderate (D1) to Extreme (D3) drought conditions are persisting across the region. These conditions are compounded by near-record low streamflows and significantly depleted groundwater levels. While recent rainfall provided minor, temporary relief to near-surface soils in the Bangor and Downeast areas, long-term precipitation deficits remain severe, meaning substantial, widespread rainfall is still needed for a full recovery. Forecasts expect these dry conditions to continue through the fall, though a strengthening El Niño offers hope for potential hydrologic recharge and drought relief this coming winter.

Please continue to monitor local impacts and encourage partners and citizen scientists to submit vital on-the-ground observations via the Condition Monitoring Observer Reports (CMOR) tool at https://droughtimpacts.unl.edu/Tools/ConditionMonitoringObservations.aspx
