Winter Fire Safety Tips

Winter fire safety requires keeping space heaters and heat sources at least 3 feet away from flammable materials, never leaving fireplaces or candles unattended, and inspecting heating systems annually. Half of home heating fires occur during December, January, and February. Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and tested monthly and never use ovens or stoves for heating.

Heating Safety

  • Space Heaters: Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from curtains, furniture, bedding, and clothes. Turn them off when leaving the room or sleeping.
  • Fireplaces: Have chimneys and vents inspected and cleaned annually. Use a sturdy screen to prevent sparks from flying out.
  • Fuel: Only use the correct, approved fuel for your heating equipment. Never use gasoline, charcoal, or other flammable liquids to start a fire.
  • Generator Safety: Keep portable generators outside, away from windows, and as far from the home as possible to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home.

Electrical & Candle Safety

  • Appliances: Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord.
  • Decorations: Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so cords do not get damaged. Turn off all holiday light strings before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Candles: Never leave burning candles unattended. Keep them away from flammable objects and out of reach of children or pets.
  • Electrical Cords: Do not run cords under rugs or carpets. Check cords for damage and replace if necessary.

General Prevention

  • Cooking: Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food.
  • Smoke Alarms: Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and inside bedrooms. Test them monthly.
  • Smoking: If you smoke, use fire-safe cigarettes and smoke outside.
  • Children: Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from open fires and space heaters.
